According to this BBC story, 55% of all emails scanned by net filtering firm MessageLabs in May were spam!

I don't know if the problem comes from people that are stupid enough to keep replying to spam or from people that are stupid enough to believe they will make big money by becoming spammers themselves, but obviously a great deal of stupidity is at work, here! Imagine if all these resources and energy were used for something smart instead (like ecology)!
